Romney expresses opposition to Alabama abortion ban

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said in an interview that aired Sunday that he does not support Alabama’s abortion ban because he believes there should be exceptions for cases of rape and incest. 

“I don’t support the Alabama law,” said said during an appearance on CNN”s “State of the Union.” “I believe that there ought to be exceptions…for rape and incest and where the life of the mother is at risk.”

“You’re seeing laws on both sides of this argument that are in the extreme,” he added “I don’t think that’s productive, I think something much more toward the center makes a lot more sense.” {mosads}

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) last week signed a bill into law to outlaw abortion except for when there are threats to the mother’s life. The legislation does not have exceptions for cases of rape and incest and is the most restrictive in the country.

Romney joined other prominent Republicans in calling for the exceptions, including President Trump, who said he supports exceptions for rape, incest and danger to the life of the mother. Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, who is Romney’s niece, also said she supports exceptions for rape and incest.
