Sarah Sanders: Dems should have a ‘come to Jesus moment’ on impeachment

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she hopes Democrats have a “come to Jesus moment” during a caucus meeting Wednesday morning amid growing talk of impeaching President Trump.

Sanders spoke with “Fox & Friends” and reporters outside the White House as House Democrats gathered to discuss their oversight strategy. An increasing number of Democratic lawmakers have voiced support for starting impeachment proceedings against Trump as the White House stonewalls Democratic requests for documents and testimony.

{mosads}“Hopefully they’re going to have a come to Jesus moment where they realize what a terrible idea this is,” Sanders said on Fox News. “There is no basis whatsoever for impeachment.”

Sanders told reporters outside the White House that it’s “absurd” to say Trump is goading Democrats into an impeachment proceeding, arguing there’s “no basis” for seeking to remove him from office.

“The president’s focused on actually doing his job. It would be nice if some of the Democrats showed up to do theirs,” Sanders said.

She cited the situation at the southern border, infrastructure and a renegotiated version of the North American Free Trade Agreement as areas where Democrats should work with Trump.

Her comments came shortly after Trump sent out a series morning tweets in which he blasted Democrats for carrying out investigations into his administration and the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

“Everything the Democrats are asking me for is based on an illegally started investigation that failed for them, especially when the Mueller Report came back with a NO COLLUSION finding,” Trump tweeted. “Now they say Impeach President Trump, even though he did nothin wrong, while they ‘fish!'”

The White House’s confrontational posture toward Democrats came hours before Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) are set to meet with Trump to discuss how to fund a previously discussed $2 trillion infrastructure package.

Trump said in a letter Tuesday night that Democrats should pass a renegotiated trade deal with Canada and Mexico before focusing on infrastructure, further complicating negotiations.
