Trump tries on Churchill-style hat in interview with Piers Morgan
President Trump on Wednesday donned a monogrammed bowler hat in the style made famous by Winston Churchill after Piers Morgan gave it to him during an interview on British TV.
Morgan presented the hat to Trump on “Good Morning Britain” as the anchor discussed the former British prime minister’s collection.
{mosads}”[Churchill] used to wear these famous hats,” Morgan said after telling Trump that the show had a “little gift” for him. “And so we’ve had one made for you. This is a Churchill hat, exactly in the style he used to wear it. We’ve had it monogrammed with D.J.T., and on the behalf of ‘Good Morning Britain’ and ITV, we’d like to present you with a Churchill hat.”
“Thank you, I never knew you had that kind of sensibility,” Trump joked as he received the hat.
Trump proceeded to bend the hat in different styles, joking that Churchill “definitely didn’t do that.” He later tried on the hat, commenting that “it’s a little big.”
“Let’s see how that looks,” Trump said. “I think Winston looked much better in this.”
The exchange came in an expansive interview Morgan conducted with Trump during the president’s state visit to the United Kingdom. Among other things, Trump discussed his previous remarks about the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle and his lack of military service.
Trump has publicly talked about his admiration for Churchill. He reportedly had a bust of Churchill reinstalled in the Oval Office on his first day as president. He also hosted a screening of “Darkest Hour,” which depicts Churchill’s early days in office, at the White House in 2017.
Trump faced heat from the British tabloid The Daily Mirror last year after sitting in Churchill’s chair during a visit to the U.K.
“How dare you,” the headline on the Mirror’s front page read over an image of Trump posing in the chair.
