Alyssa Milano lays out state-by-state abortion bill guide for Hollywood
Actress Alyssa Milano created a state-by-state abortion bill guide for Hollywood in response to many production companies claiming they will no longer film in states that have passed restrictive bans.
Milano’s map for filmmakers tracks abortion legislation in all 50 states, the actress told Variety Thursday.
“Following the passage of a number of draconian attacks on a pregnant person’s right to choose in 2019, including those in states in which the motion picture and television industries conduct significant business, it has become apparent that those in our industry need to be able to make informed choices,” Milano and activist co-author Ben Jackson said in a mission statement accompanying the report, according to Variety. {mosads}
After Georgia passed a law banned abortion as early as six weeks, when many women do not know they are pregnant, Netflix threatened to pull filming from the state if the law is not overturned by the courts. Other production companies followed.
Variety reported that Milano lives in Georgia where she had filmed the Netflix original “Insatiable,” and threatened to leave the show if it continued to shoot in the state. She told Variety she’s been fielding calls since about where productions could shoot — so she made a map.
Milano’s toolkit includes a color-coded map of states that are “most threatened,” “under threat,” and “least threatened” by abortion restrictions, according to Variety.
She is also working with Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to develop an app location managers in Georgia could use that would guarantee not spending money in places that fund voter suppression or inequality, according to Variety.
