Trump to travel to South Korea

President Trump will reportedly visit South Korea this weekend to meet with President Moon Jae-in to discuss stalled nuclear talks with North Korea.

Trump’s visit will follow his participation in the Group of 20 summit in Japan, according to Reuters.

The visit with Moon comes after Trump exchanged letters with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, leading to optimism regarding the nuclear program. Trump described the letters between the two as “beautiful.”

{mosads}Ko Min-jung, Moon’s spokeswoman, told Reuters that Trump and Moon will have “in-depth discussions on ways to work together to foster lasting peace through the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, while strengthening the two countries’ alliance.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters before departing Washington for a trip to the Middle East that the Trump administration was ready to resume talks with North Korea after discussions earlier this year stalled and proved to be unfruitful.

“I’m hopeful that this will provide a good foundation for us to begin … these important discussions with the North Koreans,” he said.

Trump is also reportedly contemplating visiting the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) during his trip to South Korea after he was forced to cancel a previous planned trip in 2017 due to heavy fog.

Trump is not expected to meet with Kim during the upcoming trip, though there is speculation surrounding it after Kim and Moon held their first summit at the DMZ last year.
