Airport terminal named after Harvey Milk opens in San Francisco

San Francisco International Airport debuted a new terminal Tuesday named after Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California’s history.

The Harvey Milk Terminal 1 currently has nine gates and will eventually feature 25 gates when it is fully operational in 2023, according to NBC Bay Area.

{mosads}Milk won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.

He was assassinated in 1978 and, according to the Harvey Milk Foundation, received death threats daily. 

The terminal includes an exhibit dedicated to the “life and legacy” of Milk.

“This exhibition celebrates the life and legacy of the visionary human rights leader, groundbreaking political luminary, and key figure of the LGBTQ rights movement through approximately 100 historic images, campaign material, and press documents,” the airport said in a statement.
