Obama gives Pope a stole
President Obama will give the pope a stole during his visit to the Vatican on Friday.
The Washington Post reports that Obama will deliver a stole that was laid on the remains of St. John Neumann.
The stole was secured for Obama by the Redemptorists of Baltimore Province.
“It’s a delight that something of one of our Redemptorist saints would be given to our Holy Father,” said Fr. Patrick Woods of the Redemptorists Baltimore province told the National Catholic Reporter. “We’re delighted as Americans that our president is visiting the Holy Father and delighted that something belonging to our province would be given to him.”
Since Neumann did a lot of work with immigrants, the stole has come to symbolize a new wave of immigration to the United States, according to the report.
