Qatar unveils 2022 World Cup logo

Qatar on Tuesday unveiled the logo for the 2022 World Cup, which will be displayed around the capital of Doha and in cities around the world in honor of the games.

The logo features a white Arabic unisex shawl with red patterning using the colors of the country’s flag. It is twisted into a figure-8 shape along the contours of the World Cup trophy, as reported by Fox Sports, with the eight representing the number of stadiums the Persian Gulf nation built for the games.{mosads}

The shawl is a traditional garment worn in winter, a reference that the World Cup will be moved to the winter of 2022 due to the country’s extreme heat over the summer, when the tournament is normally played.

The logo was projected onto the country’s National Archives in Doha’s Msheireb district with broad fanfare, including a procession of soldiers watched by hundreds in Doha.

Video of the projection was shared by the country’s Ministry of the Interior.

The logo was also displayed on the Arch of Peace in Milan and in a Paris train station, according to Fox Sports. It is also set to be displayed in New York’s Times Square and London’s Leicester Square as well as Moscow, Johannesburg and Sao Paulo, according to Yahoo News.
