China wants to remove discussions of national security from trade talks, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Negotiators are reportedly hopeful that by limiting the scope of negotiations, both sides will be more able to resolve the current impasse.

{mosads}The strategic change comes a day after President Trump delayed an upcoming increase in tariffs on $250 billion worth of goods from China at the request of Beijing.

Talks between the two countries have stalled since breaking down in May, but a new round of negotiations next month presents a potential solution to the tit-for-tat trade war.

People familiar with the plan told the Journal that Chinese negotiators will place discussions about national security issues on a separate track at the same talks.

The separation may be a hard sell given that the Trump administration has explicitly linked the two issues, like in the case of sanctions on Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.

The U.S. views the company as a security threat amid a global shift to next-generation wireless networks and has put it on an export blacklist.
