Poll: 37 percent of voters support starting impeachment proceedings

More than one-third of Americans support beginning an impeachment inquiry against President Trump, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

The Politico-Morning Consult poll found that the percentage of those surveyed who back beginning an impeachment inquiry against the president falls short of the proportion of Democratic lawmakers pushing to begin the proceedings.

{mosads}Thirty-seven percent of respondents in the poll support beginning impeachment proceedings, while half of those surveyed said they oppose it. Only 12 percent of respondents said they were undecided.

The poll was divided heavily among party lines.

Among Democrats, the poll found that 7 in 10 respondents support beginning impeachment proceedings, while 18 percent are in opposition. Meanwhile, Republican voters remain unmoved, with only 6 percent saying they want to begin proceedings against Trump.

Independent voters also did not support starting an impeachment inquiry, as 31 percent of those respondents said they want Congress to launch impeachment proceedings and 50 percent said Congress should not do so.

“Initiating impeachment proceedings against President Trump remains a popular move among the Democratic base, but it won’t necessarily help them win voters across the aisle,” Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult’s vice president, told Politico.

Since the release of former special counsel Robert Mueller’s report in the spring, support for impeachment has fluctuated slightly and has yet to break 40 percent. Opposition to impeachment has varied from 46 percent to 53 percent.

Sinclair noted that “numbers have marginally changed from July following Robert Mueller’s testimony on Capitol Hill, after which 34 percent of independents and 8 percent of Republicans supported impeachment.”

To date, there are nearly 140 House Democrats on record endorsing the impeachment of Trump in some form. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has beaten back calls for impeachment, though she has said the party is on the same page as the House focuses on investigating Trump.

The poll was conducted Sept. 13-15 and surveyed 1,994 registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
