British family suing Trump administration for ‘lawless misconduct’ in fatal crash involving diplomat’s wife

The Trump administration will be sued by a British family over the death of their son in an automobile accident thought to have been caused by the wife of an American diplomat who claimed diplomatic immunity and fled to the U.S. following the crash.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that the parents of Harry Dunn said through a spokesperson that they are planning to sue the Trump administration for “lawless misconduct” after the family said they were “lured” to the White House under false pretenses and asked to meet with the woman, Anne Sacoolas, thought to have been driving when Dunn was killed.

{mosads}The driver of Sacoolas’s car was operating the vehicle on the wrong side of the road at the time of the crash, and Sacoolas has been named in the suit as well after the family says the Trump administration tried to “cover up” their son’s death.

“We are bringing claims against both Mrs. Sacoolas in the U.S.A. for civil damages as well as the Trump administration for their lawless misconduct and attempt to cover that up,” a family spokesperson told the Times.

The Trump administration was “not only hellbent on breaking international laws, rules and conventions on diplomatic immunity, but they have no care or concern for the welfare of Harry’s family or any real intent on finding a solution,” added Radd Seiger, the spokesperson.

Dunn’s parents went on to accuse the Trump administration of luring the Dunns to the White House “under a pretense only to be ambushed by the administration who tried to engineer a grotesque meeting” between them and Sacoolas.

They are also taking legal action against the British government for its decision to honor Sacoolas’s diplomatic immunity, according to the Times.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called for Sacoolas to return to the U.K. and face legal action, adding that he would bring it up with the U.S. ambassador and that “if we can’t resolve it then … I will be raising it myself with the White House.”

“I hope that Anne Sacoolas will come back and will engage properly with the processes of law as they are carried out in this country,” he said earlier this month.
