READ: Memo of Trump’s first call with Zelensky
The White House on Friday released a memo of a call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that took place shortly after Zelensky’s victory in the Ukrainian presidential election earlier this year.
The release came minutes before another public congressional hearing begins that is part of House Democrats’ impeachment probe into Trump.
The rough transcript shows what the White House said is the first conversation between the two leaders in April. A July 25 conversation between the two prompted the House impeachment inquiry, due to Trump’s request that Zelensky open an investigation into the Biden family.
Their first conversation includes congratulations back and forth and Zelensky’s invitation to Trump to attend his inauguration.
“When I owned Miss Universe, they always had great people,” Trump said of Ukraine, according to the rough transcript.
