At least 10 more passengers on board a quarantined cruise liner anchored at the Japanese port of Yokohama have tested positive for the coronavirus, including two more Americans, according to Japanese health officials.
The Diamond Princess cruise liner was placed in a 14-day quarantine Wednesday after 10 people on board tested positive for the coronavirus. A total of 3,700 passengers and crew are quarantined on the ship, including more than 400 Americans.
On Thursday, 10 more passengers tested positive, bringing the number to 20, including three Americans. Those infected were escorted off the ship and taken to local hospitals. More test results are pending for passengers on board, who have been confined to their cabins during the quarantine.
“The health and safety of our guests and crew remains our top priority,” Princess Cruise Lines said in a statement. “We continue to work closely with the Japan Ministry of Health on all protocols and procedures while ensuring the comfort of our guests.”
Globally, there are now more than 28,000 cases of coronavirus and more than 560 deaths, the majority occurring in China. One death was confirmed in Hong Kong and one in the Philippines. Infections in mainland China spiked, with nearly 3,700 additional cases and 73 new deaths reported on Wednesday.
In the U.S., 12 cases have been confirmed with at least six cases reported in California.
