Sununu: Trump can win if he ‘stays professional,’ ‘focuses’
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) said Thursday that former President Trump can win the upcoming presidential race against Vice President Harris if he “stays professional” and focused.
“In September and October, the cost of living is going to be a very real issue in this campaign, a very real issue for Americans, as long as the former president can keep his focus there and stay professional on the campaign and talk about the things that Americans want to talk about,” Sununu told Fox News’s Neil Cavuto on “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”
“As soon as he goes off tangent, that’s where he’s letting the Democrats — letting the Democrats take the election that should be his by a landslide, it really should,” Sununu continued.
Trump has slung insults at his 2024 presidential rival as her political star has risen in the last month. Backers of Trump have pushed the former president to stick with policy instead of going after his opponents.
“At the end of the day, if he can focus on those issues for the last 60 days, he should win this,” Sununu said, citing inflation, the cost of living and credit card debt as some winning issues for him.
“He should be winning big. And if he stays professional, if he focuses on the campaign, focus on those undecided voters, not just his base, that’s what matters. And that’s how he could kind of get that fire back that he had a month and a half ago,” the governor added.
Former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway similarly said earlier this week that a winning strategy for the 45th president involves “fewer insults.”
“The winning formula for President Trump is very plain to see,” Conway told Fox Business’s Larry Kudlow on Monday. “It’s fewer insults, more insights and that policy contrast.”
Harris has been gaining in recent polling, with an average of national polls from The Hill/Decision Desk finding her 1.8 points ahead of Trump.
Recent polling from The New York Times/Siena College found Harris up 4 points on Trump in three important battleground states: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign.
