The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has climbed past 10,000, reaching 10,038 as of Friday morning, Johns Hopkins CSSE data notes. A total of 245,484 confirmed cases range across five continents, with Antarctica currently recording no cases.

Conversely, 86,035 people have recovered from the virus across the globe.

In an analysis, Bloomberg calculates the rapid spread of the disease is spreading at a quicker rate than previously seen.

“It took three months for the first 100,000 cases, but only 12 days for the next 100,000,” Bloomberg analysts noted. Researchers used data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in their calculations.

Bloomberg’s analysis further calculates that while the number of worldwide cases doubled to 200,000 in the 12 days through Thursday, on Friday the tally already was halfway to the 300,000 mark.

Parallel to this calculation, Bloomberg notes that Christian Lindmeier, a spokesman for WHO, confirmed that the number of cases in France has doubled in four days. Lindmeier further advised that if countries don’t have enough tests, they should triage.

A United Nations spokesman, Jens Laerke, confirmed that the United Nations is expected to give details next week about a “humanitarian response” to COVID-19, per Bloomberg reporting.

Prevention efforts have dominated public policy developments. In the United States, the West Coast of the U.S. had been greatly affected, with the Life Care Center of Kirkland nursing home outbreak in Washington state, as well as subsequent community spread, resulting in 74 deaths.

South of Washington state, California has recorded 18 deaths. The state has now issued a shelter-in-place order for all citizens after first launching the measure in Northern California’s Bay Area.

Across the country, the East Coast has seen rampant increases of coronavirus cases, with New York recording 38 fatalities, the second-highest state behind Washington.

Between California’s shelter-in-place order and the community quarantine of New Rochelle, N.Y., the U.S. has taken unforeseen and stringent measures to prevent the virus from gaining further foothold stateside.

Globally, the coronavirus is spreading at similarly fast rates. Italy — whose citizens are completely quarantined — has suffered 3,405 fatalities and has a confirmed caseload of 41,035. The fatalities have surpassed those recorded in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak, which has recorded 3,133 total deaths.

What scientists know regarding the total fatalities from the coronavirus pandemic continues to evolve. A study recently reported that the number of deaths resulting from the coronavirus were overestimated in China, which also revealed a positive relationship between susceptibility and age.

Simultaneously, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirm that approximately one-fifth, or around 20 percent, of infected patients who have been hospitalized, are between the ages of 20-44.
