Voters are split on which party in Congress is doing a better job at helping Americans during the coronavirus crisis, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.
Of those surveyed, 35 percent of registered voters said Republicans are better helping Americans, 35 percent said the Democrats were doing a better job, and 30 percent said the did not know who was doing a better job.
The April 2-3 survey found a split in age groups on who thought which party was helping Americans more.
Younger Americans felt Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill were helping the most, with 49 percent of voters 18-34 years old saying so, while voters in older age groups said Republicans were doing a better job at helping the country.
As expected, the results did fall heavily on party lines.
Eighty-one percent of Republican voters said GOP lawmakers were doing a better job at helping Americans while 73 percent of Democratic voters said the same of Democrats.
A slight majority of independent voters said they were unsure, at 53 percent.
Additionally, Democratic voters were more likely to be unsure who was doing a better job at helping Americans than Republican voters, at 20 percent and 16 percent, respectively.
“Even though Congress just passed this massive bill and is going to go back again to pass something else, I think the fact that it’s still a side-show compared to what the president is doing,” Karlyn Bowman, public opinion analyst and Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told The Hill.
The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 933 registered voters between April 2-3. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
