Fuel distributors want hazard pay for their workers
Fuel distributors are asking for their employees to be included in a proposal that would give essential workers up to $25,000 in hazard pay.
The International Liquid Terminals Association and the National Tank Truck Carriers wrote to Congress on Wednesday in support of the proposed “heroes fund” which may be included in the next coronavirus stimulus package.
“Without the continued work performed by these operations professionals, the fuel required to move critical supplies and people – including essential workers in other industries – would become unavailable,” wrote the groups, which represent diesel and gasoline fuel storage, loading, trucking and distribution companies.
“A program to provide hazard pay and recruitment bonuses to support the critical workforce responsible for the distribution of diesel and gasoline would clearly strengthen the resilience of this critical energy sector, our nation’s ability to respond to the virus, and the health of our entire economy,” they added.
The proposed fund would give funding to eligible employers who could then give payment to workers. Workers making less than $200,000 per year could receive up to $25,000 and workers making more than $200,000 could receive $5,000.
The Trump administration has labeled those working in petroleum product storage and transportation as part of the essential infrastructure workforce.
