President Trump’s campaign on Wednesday attacked presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden on his China policies in a series of ads.
In an appearance on Hill.TV, Marc Lotter, the director of strategic communications for the Trump campaign, said that the country needs “strong leadership to stand up to China,” especially after the coronavirus pandemic, and he said that Biden’s record on China shows he is not up to take on that role.
“Joe Biden has a long record of being very weak on China, and also the American people overwhelmingly believe, correctly, that the coronavirus emanated from China,” he said.
The campaign official said that the ads are “resonating with the American people,” stating that 30 percent of the viewers are less likely to vote for Biden. The ads are running in the states in the Midwest, West and Florida, one of the key battleground states in the election.
“I don’t think it matters where you live,” he said. “Most people believe China is where this virus emanated from.”
“And from what our polling shows … is that a majority of Americans want China to be held responsible for the virus and that they also trust the president to do so and to rebuild this economy,” he added.
Trump and his administration have promoted that they will be tougher on China than a possible Biden administration.
The president and his officials have emphasized China’s role in the pandemic, accusing the country of withholding information from the international community that would have helped in fighting the coronavirus crisis.
The former vice president has released a digital ad alleging the Trump administration failed to react quickly enough to the pandemic months ago.
