Decision made on additional charges in George Floyd’s death: CNN
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D) plans to make a “significant announcement” Wednesday afternoon regarding possible additional charges in the police-involved killing of George Floyd, law enforcement officials tell CNN.
According to the sources, Ellison’s office has completed its initial review of the evidence in the case.
Floyd, an unarmed black man, died after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over eight minutes during an arrest, continuing to do so after Floyd was unconscious.
Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter on Friday. Earlier this week, the Hennepin County medical examiner ruled Floyd’s death a homicide, as did an independent autopsy.
Three other now-fired officers who were at the scene have not been charged.
Over the weekend, Gov. Tim Walz (D) signaled that Ellison would lead any prosecutions associated with the incident.
Walz on Tuesday said the state’s Department of Human Rights would launch an investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department. The state has also filed a civil rights charge against the department.
Additionally, both the Justice Department and FBI have said they will be investigating whether Chauvin and the other officers violated federal civil rights laws.
Attorney General William Barr has said he’s confident “justice will be served.”
