More than 80 percent of voters want schools to reopen to either fully online or a combination of online and in-person learning as concerns about the spread of the coronavirus continue to grip the country, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.
Forty-one percent of registered voters in the July 17-20 survey believe schools should reopen to a combination of online and in-person learning, while 40 percent said they think schools should reopen fully online.
By contrast, just 19 percent of respondents said schools should reopen to full in-person learning.
The survey found a majority, 53 percent, of Democrats prefer to reopening schools fully online, along with 36 percent of independents and 28 percent of Republicans.
A plurality of Republican and independent voters prefer a combination of online and in-person learning, at 42 and 46 percent, respectively.
Additionally, one-third of Republicans said schools should reopen fully in-person, while 18 percent of independents and 10 percent of Democrats agreed.
The poll found 53 percent of black voters said schools should reopen fully online, compared to 46 percent of hispanic voters and 36 percent of white voters.
“American parents are facing unprecedented uncertainty when it comes to what to do with their children in the fall,” Mallory Newall, Director of Research at Ipsos, told Hill.TV.
“It doesn’t appear at this point that parents think in-person schooling is the answer,” Newall added.
The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 2,829 registered voters between July 17-20. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.84 percentage points.
