Oprah Magazine buys 26 billboards demanding Louisville police arrests for Breonna Taylor’s death
Oprah Winfrey’s magazine has purchased 26 billboards in Louisville, Ky., demanding the arrest of the police involved in the killing of Breonna Taylor, a Black EMT.
The billboards feature Taylor’s face with the words, “Demand that the police involved in killing Breonna Taylor be arrested and charged,” as well as a link to the website of Until Freedom, a social justice organization. The billboards were put up the same week Winfrey released the O magazine issue featuring Taylor on the cover.
The billboards call for the arrest of the three police officers involved in the March 13 shooting that killed Taylor, 26. After the officers, who were executing a no-knock search warrant, entered unannounced and did not identify themselves, Taylor’s boyfriend opened fire, and the three officers returned fire, killing her.
The number of billboards represent each year of Taylor’s life.
Until Freedom thanked the magazine for the billboards on Twitter.
“Together, we will make sure no one forgets #BreonnaTaylor’s name and recommit to the fight for justice for her and her family,” the organization said.
Taylor’s case came under renewed national scrutiny after the May 25 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. No arrests have been made in Taylor’s case, although one of the officers involved, Brett Hankison, has been fired.
