Second University of Maryland football game canceled over COVID-19 concerns

The University of Maryland has canceled its second football game this season due to coronavirus-related concerns as cases rise in the region.

The decision not to play Michigan State this weekend comes as the team announced Thursday that head coach Mike Locksley tested positive for the virus Wednesday and is currently in self-isolation, ESPN reported.

The game, slated for Saturday, will be declared a no contest and will not be rescheduled.

“I am gutted for our team and for our fans,” Locksley said in a statement. “This team is eager to play and compete and continue the growth we’ve seen this season. This virus is testing our players and coaches right now, but I have no doubt that we will emerge as a stronger unit for having gone through this together.

Locksley said he is feeling “strong” and is experiencing only minor symptoms, adding that he would lead the football program virtually in preparation for its next game against Indiana.

Maryland had also canceled last week’s game against Ohio State.

The Terrapins had planned to resume practice this week but did not due to existing virus cases on the team that have not subsided, ESPN reported.

Both college and professional football teams have struggled with how to move forward with their seasons amid the pandemic.

As it stands, the Big Ten has had four games canceled involving two separate teams with COVID-19 outbreaks.

This month, Wisconsin canceled its second Big Ten game following spikes in cases of the virus found among team members and staff.
