Chamber of Commerce slams GOP effort to challenge Biden’s win

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce in a statement on Monday excoriated an effort by congressional Republicans to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

“Efforts by some members of Congress to disregard certified election results in an effort to change the election outcome or to try a make a long-term political point undermines our democracy and the rule of law and will only result in further division,” the group said.

“We urge Congress to fulfill its responsibility in counting the electoral votes, the Trump administration to facilitate an orderly transition for the incoming Biden administration, and all of our elected officials to devote their energies to combatting the pandemic and supporting our economic recovery,” the Chamber added.

At least 12 Republican senators, including Josh Hawley (Mo.), Ted Cruz (Texas) and Ron Johnson (Wis.), and at least 100 GOP representatives have said they will raise objections during the certification of Electoral College votes in key states. The Electoral College last month affirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

The Republicans’ effort is almost certain to fail in both the Democratic-controlled House and in the Senate, where a slim GOP majority, including Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio), have said they will not support it.

The Chamber, which traditionally backs Republicans, threw its support behind 23 centrist Democrats in the 2020 election cycle, including Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) and former Reps. Joe Cunningham (D-S.C.) and Abby Finkenauer (Iowa). All 29 Chamber-endorsed Republicans also won reelection.
