Conservative doubtful on Cheney reelection prospects after impeachment vote
Dick Morris, a conservative political operative, expressed doubts during an appearance on the John Catsimatidis radio show this week that Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) can win reelection in her state after her vote to impeach President Trump.
“Cheney, I think, is a gone goose,” Morris told Catsimatidis on his radio show on WABC 770 AM.
Trump was impeached by the House on Jan. 13 for his role in inciting the attacks on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Cheney, the third-ranking leader in the House GOP conference, was one of 10 Republicans to vote to impeach.
The No. 3 House Republican defeated a challenge from some of Trump’s allies in the lower chamber to remove her from her leadership post as conference chair over her vote to impeach the former president.
“While she did win the vote in the House because it was basically set up by the leadership and she’s kind of inherited royalty among Republicans,” Morris said. “But, in fact, there’s some polling in Wyoming [that suggests that] she has a 13 percent job approval among Republicans.”
Morris, whose career includes a stint as a political consultant to former President Clinton, predicted that Cheney and other Republicans that voted to impeach Trump would have a difficult time getting reelected given the support for Trump within the GOP.
Since her vote to impeach Trump, Cheney has been censured by the Republicans in ten counties in Wyoming and will have to face a 2022 primary challenger.
Morris formerly wrote a column for The Hill.
John Catsimatidis is an investor in The Hill.
