National Park Service says body, motorcycle found at bottom of Grand Canyon

The National Park Service said Thursday that it found a body and motorcycle below the South Kaibab Trailhead at the Grand Canyon.

Park rangers recovered the body on Wednesday, which was roughly 465 feet below the rim, the Park Service said in a statement. The individual is believed to the missing person John Pennington of Walton, Ky.

The body was transported to the rim by helicopter and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Pennington was believed to have entered the Grand Canyon around Feb. 23 and abandoned his personal vehicle near Yaki Point, according to the Park Service, which is investigating alongside the medical examiner’s office.

No additional information was available from the agency on Thursday.

The Park Service said on Sunday that it had initiated a missing person search for Pennington. The 40-year-old was believed to be traveling alone, the agency said.
