COVID-19 vaccinations given at MLB stadiums surge past 1 million
More than 1 million COVID-19 vaccinations have been given at Major League Baseball stadiums that have been converted into mass vaccination centers.
A total of 11 MLB stadiums have served their local communities as vaccination sites in the off-season, the league noted in a press release on Friday.
Oakland Coliseum, Marlins Park, Dodger Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Citi Field and PNC Park have all committed to continuing to provide inoculations after opening day. Minute Maid Park and Petco Park will stop disbursing shots, while the Colorado Rockies’ Coors Field is still awaiting a decision on whether or not it will continue to be used as a vaccination center, MLB noted.
Fenway Park and Globe Life Field were also involved in providing shots during the off-season, according to the release.
The MLB regular season begins on Thursday.
“Major League Baseball, our clubs and major league players have worked hand-in-hand with communities across the U.S. and Canada during the pandemic,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “I commend the clubs that have hosted vaccination and testing at their ballparks and all of our franchises for promoting health and safety in our communities. Most importantly, MLB is grateful to the countless heroes who are lifting up our society and helping us reach the better days ahead.”
Major League Baseball has also created the It’s Up To You campaign in an effort to get information to fans about coronavirus vaccinations. Angels centerfielder Mike Trout and Mets first baseman Pete Alonso have taken part in spots for the campaign, according to The Associated Press.
