Capitol Police officer does not appear to have been stabbed, shot in attack: report

The Capitol Police officer who was killed last week when a car rammed into one of the barriers surrounding the Capitol complex does not appear to have been stabbed, slashed or shot, The Associated Press reported on Monday, citing a Capitol Police official.

Authorities say Capitol Police Officer William “Billy” Evans died on Friday shortly after Noah Green, a 25-year-old man from Indiana, hit him and another officer with his car before driving into a barricade. Green then exited his car while brandishing a knife and lunged at officers before being fatally shot.

The second officer was released from the hospital over the weekend.

In the moments following the attack on Friday, law enforcement officials had first thought the suspect may have stabbed Evans, the AP reported. Video of the incident showed Green lunging at the officers with a knife, Acting Chief of the Capitol Police Yogananda Pittman told reporters on Friday.

Rumors also circulated, according to The AP, that Evans may have been hit by gunfire when the officers had shot Green.

While the investigation is still ongoing, a police official told The AP that there is no indication that Evans suffered firearm or knife injuries. The wire service noted that the official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they could not discuss details of the investigation publicly.

The Hill has reached out to the Capitol Police Department for confirmation.

On Monday, the Metropolitan Police Department released a photo of the knife carried by the suspect in the attack.

Following the attack, Facebook announced that it was removing Green’s account and scrubbing any content from him that violated company policies.

Photos from the now-deleted Facebook page show that Green was an apparent follower of Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam. The photos show him promoting speeches from Farrakhan and Elijah Muhammad, the previous leader of the Nation of Islam.

On Saturday, a U.S. official told the AP that Green had suffered mental health issues, including delusions and suicidal thoughts.
