Officer fired after Rayshard Brooks shooting is reinstated

The Atlanta police officer who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks has been reinstated following a ruling by the city’s Civil Service Board.

The board determined that Garrett Rolfe was not given “his right to due process” when he was fired a day after the June 2020 shooting.

“Due to the City’s failure to comply with several provisions of the Code and the information received during witnesses’ testimony, the Board concludes the Appellant was not afforded his right to due process,” the board said in a statement Wednesday. “Therefore, the Board grants the Appeal of Garrett Rolfe and revokes his dismissal as an employee of the [Atlanta Police Department].”

Rolfe was charged with felony murder in Brooks’s death, which happened in a Wendy’s parking lot that was later burned in protests. Brooks’s death occurred weeks after the May 2020 police killing of George Floyd, which sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice.
