Twitter rolls out ‘Tip Jar’ feature

Twitter is rolling out a feature for users to send and receive tips, it said Thursday. 

Users can enable a “Tip Jar” on their account that connects to various payment methods, including Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal and Venmo. 

“You drive the conversation on Twitter and we want to make it easier for you to support each other beyond Follows, Retweets, and Likes. Today, we’re introducing Tip Jar – a new way for people to send and receive tips,” Twitter’s senior product manager, Esther Crawford, said in a  blog post.

Twitter will not take a cut from the tips sent to users, according to the post. 

A spokesperson for Twitter told The Hill the platform does not set a limit to how much a user can send or receive through the Tip Jars. 

The Tip Jar feature is rolling out for a limited group of users starting Thursday, including creators, journalists, experts and nonprofits. All accounts using Twitter in English will be able to start sending tips to accounts with enabled Tip Jars. 

The platform said more people will be able to add Tip Jar to their profile “soon,” and it will be expanded to more languages.  

The Tip Jar feature is the “first step” in the platform’s effort to create new ways for users to receive and show support on Twitter with money, Crawford wrote. 

Earlier this year Twitter said it was exploring a feature that would allow users to charge for exclusive content through a “Super Follows” feature.
