Jennifer Farmer, author and campaign surrogate for Ohio congressional candidate Nina Turner, said on Thursday that Turner’s campaign needs the progressive movement to “show up” after her primary opponent released a list of negative talking points in a bid to attract support.
Appearing on Hill.TV’s “Rising,” Farmer discussed the recent endorsement Turner, who is vying against Shontel Brown in the Democratic primary for Ohio’s 11th District, received from progressive environmental group the Sunrise Movement.
Turner is a former Ohio state senator who co-chaired Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign.
“As you all know, Nina Turner is running a competitive race. She’s running a race that’s fueled by the people,” Farmer said. “Because of her impressive work, because of her lead, there’s obviously attempts to kinda take her down. And right now the opponent is basically signaling to super PACs that she’s open and receptive to funds.”
“We know that Sen. Bernie Sanders ran a grassroots campaign powered by the people, and it’s that type of support that’s going to push Nina Turner over the edge,” Farmer added. “And so what we’re saying to the progressive movement is ‘Listen, this is the time where we need you to show up with those small-dollar donations that really add up and, again, will take her from Cleveland to Washington D.C.'”
The Sunrise Movement announced its endorsement of Turner, a long-time ally of Sanders, on Monday.
“For years, Nina Turner has been a champion for people everywhere on a myriad of issues impacting our communities — all while inspiring so many to join the fight for what they believe in. Now, it’s time for us to have her back,” electoral politics director for the organization Shanté Wolfe said in a statement.
