Cow that escaped during LA police chase to live at farm sanctuary

The sole cow that escaped a California slaughter house and averted Los Angeles Police during a chase Tuesday has been caught, and will be spared from the rest of the group’s fate.

A group of about 40 cows escaped from a local slaughterhouse on Tuesday after a gate was left open at the meat packing facility. 

Police chased the herd through the Pico Rivera neighborhood for a little over an hour Tuesday night, securing all but two of the 40 cows. Another was fatally shot by police during the chase. 

On Thursday, the lucky bovine was finally contained and was returned to the slaughterhouse temporarily before she was rescued. Now, the cow will spend the rest of its days the animal rescue Farm Sanctuary, according to an Instagram post from the organization.

The rescue effort was coordinated with the help of Grammy Award-winning songwriter Diane Warren, who paid for the cow to be saved, according to CBS Los Angeles.

“Seeing these cows escaping their horrible fate broke my heart,” Warren said. “They knew what awaited them. These are smart, empathetic, beautiful souls.”

She added, “What Paul McCartney said is so true, if slaughterhouses had glass walls everyone would be a vegetarian. Your steak and hamburger comes with a side of torture and murder.”

The sanctuary echoed Warren’s message of compassion in its Instagram post.

“The scene in Pico Rivera on Tuesday night should be all the proof anyone needs to know that cows want to live, and that the way we breed, exploit, and slaughter them for food is repugnant,” said Farm Sanctuary Board Chair Emily Deschanel.
