Pearl Milling, Aunt Jemima’s replacement, begins nationwide rollout

Breakfast mixes and ingredients that were once branded Aunt Jemima will be shipped out under their new brand name and packaging starting May 31, CNN Business reported.

Pancake mixes, syrups, cornmeal, flour and other products that were formerly known under the Aunt Jemima brand will soon be packaged under their new name, Pearl Milling Company.

The company announced earlier this year that the packaging would keep its color scheme but a 19th-century waterfall would be used on products instead of the Aunt Jemima image.

In June 2020, Quaker Oats, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, announced that it would be doing away with the Aunt Jemima branding, saying it recognized that “Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype.”

The move came shortly after George Floyd, a Black man, was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer and the incident prompted conversations about racism in the U.S.

In February, parent company PepsiCo announced that Aunt Jemima would rebrand as Pearl Milling Company.

In an effort to help people transition between the two brands, the company’s packaging includes a banner stating “New Name, Same Great Taste as Aunt Jemima.”

According to CNN Business, the new packaging may not be available in stores yet, as the company will continue to ship new products over the next few months.

“We are working closely with our retail partners to get the new Pearl Milling Company packaging on shelves. … People may still see some products under the old brand name as we work through the transition,” the brand told CNN Business.

Pearl Milling Company added that the taste of its products would not change after its rebranding.
