2 million dehumidifiers recalled over potential fire risk

About 2 million dehumidifiers manufactured by New Widetech were recalled Wednesday due to concerns that they could overheat and catch fire, according to an advisory posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Another 380,000 have been recalled in Canada and approximately 25,000 in Mexico.

According to the advisory, the manufacturer is aware of 107 incidents related to dehumidifiers that have either overheated or have caught on fire. Though the manufacturer has not received any reports of injuries, the 107 incidents have caused about $17 million in property damages.

Consumers have been asked to reach out to the manufacturer for a refund and stop using products affected by the recall. 

New Widetech said in a statement that it “is offering consumers with a recalled dehumidifier an appropriate refund commensurate with the age of the dehumidifiers.”

The advisory said that the products were sold between February 2009 and August 2017 at Lowe’s, Costco, Walmart and Menards, as well as other locations.

The recall is for specific products under the following brands: AeonAir, Amana, ArcticAire, Classic, Commercial Cool, Danby, De’Longhi, Edgestar, Friedrich, Generations, Haier, Honeywell, Idylis, Ivation, perfect aire, SuperClima, Whirlpool and Whynter.
