Story at a glance

  • The 2021 Met Gala took place on Monday night.
  • Model and actress Cara Delevingne wore a white Dior vest and matching trousers, with red letters emblazoned across the chest, reading, “Peg the patriarchy.”
  • New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D) wore a suffragette gown that read, “Equal rights for women.”

The Met Gala is about statement outfits, and two attendees to 2021’s fashion event of the year used theirs to make a statement on women’s rights.

Model and actress Cara Delevingne made her entrance in a white Dior vest and matching trousers, with red letters emblazoned across the chest, reading, “Peg the patriarchy.”

“It’s about women empowerment. … It’s a bit like stick it to the man,” Delevingne told Vogue.

Meanwhile, New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D) donned a lace and satin gown of purple, white, and gold — colors associated with the suffrage movement — with “equal rights for women” and “ERA Yes” sewn across multiple times.

“ERA Yes” refers to the Equal Rights Amendment, which would prohibit gender discrimination.

Across the country, women’s rights are under attack,” Maloney tweeted. “I have long used fashion as a force 4 change. As the Met Costume Institute reopens w/ their inaugural exhibit celebrating American designers, I am calling 4 the certification of the ERA so women can be equal once and for all.”

The statements come amid high tensions after Texas enacted a new law earlier this month making it illegal to access or provide an abortion in the state after the sixth week of pregnancy.
