Netflix announces partnership with video game developer

On Tuesday, Netflix announced its first partnership with a video game development company as it prepares to expand its offerings into the lucrative sector.

The streaming behemoth purchased Night School Studio, the developer that launched the popular video games “Oxenfree” and “Afterparty.” Together, the companies say they will work on creating a new video game library for Netflix users with a heavy emphasis on artistic value and storytelling. 

“We’re inspired by their bold mission to set a new bar for storytelling in games,” Netflix said in the press release confirming the deal. “Their commitment to artistic excellence and proven track record make them invaluable partners as we build out the creative capabilities and library of Netflix games together.”

Sean Krankel, one of the founders of Night School Studio, said in a separate announcement that while it will be joining the Netflix team, the company will continue its original work in developing “Oxenfree II” and other video games aside from its work with Netflix.

The games under development by Netflix will be intended for users of all skill levels and interests. 

Reports emerged earlier this year about Netflix’s ambition to grow its platform and offerings to include video games. In July, Bloomberg reported that it had hired several tech executive veterans to help grow the video game arm of the company.

Notably, the video game selections will be available for users without in-app payment procedures.
