Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupts

Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano was erupting Wednesday afternoon within a closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced.

The USGS said the volcano was in “full swing” and was not in an area with any homes.

“What was once a cooling lava lake is now a new fissure eruption!” they tweeted.

The eruption reportedly poses no danger to residents, according to Reuters.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory elevated the alert level from “watch” to “warning” and its aviation color code from “orange” to “red” as the eruption progressed, according to the volcano updates.

The latest color indicates that the eruption is “imminent, underway or suspected.”
