Police think they have found body of missing 19-year-old Miya Marcano
Florida authorities announced Saturday that they found a body believed to be that of 19-year-old Miya Marcano, who has been missing in late September.
Speaking at a news conference on Saturday, Sheriff John Mina from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said that while the sheriff office’s emergency response team was searching a wooded area close to an Orlando, Fla., apartment complex they “discovered a body we believe to be that of Miya Marcado” around 10:45 a.m.
Mina said they used cell phone records to direct them to search toward the apartment complex in Orlando.
According to the sheriff, the records indicated that Armando Manuel Caballero, who authorities suspect is responsible for Marcano’s death, was near the complex at the same time that she went missing.
Mina said that an official autopsy is still needed by the medical examiner’s office, but he added that Marcano’s parents had been notified of the discovery. The sheriff explained that a purse that included her identification in it had been found near the body.
The sheriff said that a cause of death had not been determined.
“Obviously this is not the update that I wanted to give to everyone today,” Mina said, during the briefing.
“On behalf of the men and women of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, we offer our deepest condolences to Miya’s parents and her family and her loved ones,” he added.
Marcano was last seen at her apartment complex in Orlando — a different building from the one where she was found — on Sept. 24.
Caballero, who is believed to have worked at the complex, had allegedly gained access to Marcano’s apartment without her approval, authorities believe, CNN reported.
Authorities found Caballero’s body earlier this week. Officials believed that he died by suicide.
Mina told reporters that authorities believe Caballero was responsible for the crime and that they were not looking for any other suspects at that time.
