Thousands protest against Bukele in El Salvador as grievances mount

At least 4,000 people in El Salvador took the streets on Sunday to speak out against recent decisions made by the Bukele government, Reuters reported.

An estimated 4,000 people marched in the streets of the capital city of San Salvador to protest President Nayib Bukele, who jokingly declared himself the “coolest dictator” on Twitter in August. 

Thousands held signs protesting the enactment of bitcoin as a legal tender of El Salvador. They also blasted the removal of Supreme Court judges and the possibility that Bukele could seek a second term, Reuters noted.

“What does El Salvador want? Get rid of the dictator!” the protestors reportedly chanted near the capital’s main square. The wire service added that they also set fire to dolls meant to look like Bukele. 

Protests previously erupted against the president in August, which he criticized by saying they are fighting “a dictatorship that doesn’t exist.”

Bukele’s reaction to the latest protest conveyed a similar sentiment, this time calling the protest a “failure.”

“The march is a failure and they know it….. Nobody believes them here anymore,” he wrote on Twitter.
