American Airlines scales back international flights after Boeing fails to deliver promised planes

American Airlines is scaling down its international flights this summer due to delays in promised aircraft from Boeing. 

The airline announced Friday that it will temporarily suspend flights between Seattle and London, Los Angeles and Sydney, and Dallas and Santiago, Chile, The Associated Press reported. It will also pause its plan to start flights between Dallas and Tel Aviv, which were originally scheduled to begin in June.

American Airlines said Boeing had promised it 13 new 787 Dreamliner planes this year but that it will likely only receive 10 of them in 2022 and the remaining aircrafts in 2023, according to the AP. The airline said Boeing has promised them compensation.

Boeing has experienced a number of production flaws in the 787 Dreamliner aircrafts, which have delayed deliveries. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said earlier this week that agency inspectors will maintain authority over certifying the new planes as opposed to Boeing employees. 

American first announced in December that it would cut back on international flights this summer due to delays for the 787 Dreamliner aircrafts. The airline said it would not offer flights to Edinburgh; Shannon, Ireland, or Hong Kong, and will “significantly” decrease the number of planes flying to Shanghai, Beijing and Sydney temporarily. American also said it would not return service to Prague or Dubrovnik, Croatia.
