If you could create a new committee or subcommittee, what would it be? A committee to cut out waste on Capitol Hill. Why should every member receive three copies of a bill every time they sign on as a co-sponsor?!

In 2000, Aaron Sporck, a West Virginia native and college senior at the time, saw an opening to serve his home state in Washington, D.C. Republican Shelley Moore Capito had just been elected to represent the state’s 2nd Congressional District, and Sporck contacted her to present his case for why he should work for her. He’s from Charleston, too, and he knew his way around Capitol Hill, having just finished a summer internship with then-Rep. Bob Ehrlich (R-Md.).

Ten years later, Sporck is still with Capito, serving as her legislative director for the past five years after having worked his way up the office’s ladder from his initial job as a staff assistant.

Sporck knew early on that he’d landed in the right profession. He appreciated that being a congressional employee let people get their hands on meaningful work from the outset of their careers. 

“I just saw friends from college in other places, [and they] were banging their heads against the wall in the corporate world,” Sporck says.

His career path might take him somewhere beyond Congress, though. Sporck has specialized in economic and financial-services policy issues, areas that have piqued his interest in getting firsthand experience in the business world.

While Sporck isn’t sure if he’ll someday head back to West Virginia, he’s still a West Virginian at heart. He professes a love for skiing at Snowshoe, one of the state’s top ski areas.

“I’ve been skiing there since I was 2,” he says.
