Obama to Oprah on birthplace: ‘I was there’

President Obama joked to Oprah Winfrey on Wednesday that he knows he was born in the U.S. and is eligible to serve as president.

“Can I just say? I was there, so I knew that — I knew I had been born,” Obama said while taping an interview with Winfrey on her talk show in Chicago. “I remembered it,” he said, prompting laughter from the live audience.

Obama taped the segment with first lady Michelle Obama a few hours after releasing his long-form birth certificate, which the White House posted on its website.

{mosads}The president continued to joke about the “birther” issue at a Democratic National Committee event at former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine’s (D) house in New York.

“Today was a fun day,” he said. “Nobody checked my ID at the door.”

After the White House released the long-form certificate, real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump took credit. 

Trump, who is considering running as a Republican for president, has used that issue and his own name recognition to jump to the top of some polls surveying voters on their GOP candidate preferences. 

Obama jabbed at Trump throughout the day, though he didn’t mention the businessman by name. He referred to “carnival barkers” in comments at the White House, and to reality shows during the DNC event.

“But it was also a serious day because part of what happened this morning was me trying to remind the press, and trying to remind both parties, that what we do in politics is not a reality show,” Obama said. “It’s serious.”
