The week ahead: Nuclear safety in focus
Also Wednesday, a panel of the House Ways and Means Committee will walk into the minefield of energy tax policy.
The Select Revenue Measures subcommittee will look in particular at the NAT GAS Act that would provide billions of dollars in tax breaks to spur conversion to natural gas in the nation’s heavy trucking fleet.
The bipartisan bill is at the heart of a billionaire face-off between energy magnate T. Boone Pickens (who is heavily promoting it) and the Koch Brothers, who oppose it alongside several conservative groups.
More Wednesday: A panel of the Environment and Public Works Committee will hold a hearing on “Federal Actions to Clean Up Contamination from Uranium Mining and Milling Operations.”
There will be other action beyond the hearings:
The Energy Daily and the Nuclear Energy Institute are hosting a media breakfast Wednesday with Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.), a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee who leads the subcommittee overseeing electric power and other issues.
The Bipartisan Policy Center will host a forum titled “Evolving Nuclear Technology and Regulation: Lessons Learned from Fukushima.” The event will include NRC member George Apostolakis, former Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) and other experts.
Also Wednesday, the Women’s Council on Energy and the Environment will host a forum on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s plans for a nuclear fuel bank.
