The deep-pocketed EMILY’s List is endorsing Rep. Tim Walberg’s (R-Mich.) opponent, the latest sign he may have a tougher race on his hands than in past years.
The group, which backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, is backing former Michigan state Sen. Pam Byrnes (D) in the race.
“Pam has proven herself as a fighter for women and families in Michigan, and the time to send her to Washington is now. She stood up for women’s health while her Tea Party opponent voted to slash resources for Michigan women,” says EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock. “The call for Pam’s leadership to move our country forward and to stop extreme Republicans from turning back the clock on women’s rights is now louder than ever.”
Walberg’s district leans slightly Republican — Mitt Romney took 51 percent of the vote there in 2012. But Walberg has maintained a staunchly conservative voting record, which Democrats believe has given them an opening against him.
