A New York congressman says Alex Rodriguez is “a disgrace” and doesn’t want him back on the Yankees.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), like many Yankees fans, wasn’t bothered when Rodriguez was recently suspended for the 2014 season for his alleged connection to performance-enhancing drugs.
{mosads}Asked whether he wants the controversial third baseman to return to the Yankees after his suspension, Nadler on Tuesday night told The Hill, “No, no. He’s a disgrace … and over the hill.”
Rodriguez has repeatedly said he is innocent and is appealing the decision. His camp strongly criticized a “60 Minutes” segment this month. In it, Anthony Bosch — who founded the now shuttered Florida anti-aging clinic Biogenesis — said he injected A-Rod with banned drugs.
Rodriguez’s lawyer did not return The Hill’s phone call seeking comment.
Rep. Jose Serrano (D-N.Y.), whose congressional website features a photo of Yankee Stadium, was more circumspect in his comments on A-Rod.
Asked if he thinks Rodriguez is lying, Serrano responded, “How would I know that? He’s been suspended, he’s appealed it. Once it’s appealed, it’s best for people not to comment on it. What I think is not important — the court will decide now about his appeal.”
He added, “When there are problems with baseball, of course as a fan, I’m troubled by it … I’m looking forward to the team strengthening itself so we can win again and that’s what’s important. You know, we Yankee fans are very arrogant about winning, when we don’t win, we go through withdrawal symptoms.”
Pressed on Rodriguez-gate, Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.) shrugged and said, “I’m a Mets fan.”
