Barrow: Cut fed spending by limiting limos
A House Democrat has proposed legislation that would require the elimination of limousines used by the federal government.
the bill, H.R. 4331, is part of Rep. John Barrow’s (D-Ga.) effort to seek constituent input on how to reduce government spending.
“There’s so much waste in government, and I’m doing my part to eliminate it,” Barrow says on his website.
{mosads}Barrow says the number of federal limousines can be cut without sacrificing security for top government officials.
“This legislation will cut the luxury limousine fleet in half, and the rest of the legislative package will make a lot more cuts — all to make sure the federal government is a good steward of the taxpayer’s hard-earned money,” he said.
In fiscal 2012, the government had 130 limousines, down from the 412 being used in 2010.
Under the bill, the government would have to reduce its limousine fleet to no more than 50 percent of the number in operation in fiscal 2014. There’s just one exception in the bill that says the cut shall not apply to “any limousine determined by the President to be essential for reasons of national security.”
