Obama schedules return to the campaign trail

After scrapping two days of election events to attend to the Ebola crisis, President Obama will return to the campaign trail on Sunday.

The president is expected to fly to his hometown of Chicago to attend an event for Gov. Pat Quinn, the White House announced Thursday.

{mosads}A White House official said earlier this week that Obama is also planning to attend a rally for Maryland Democratic gubernatorial candidate Anthony Brown before departing for Illinois.

The president had originally planned to begin his campaign schedule with a rally for Connecticut incumbent Gov. Dan Malloy on Wednesday, but canceled those plans after a second Dallas-area nurse contracted Ebola. Obama was also expected to travel to Rhode Island and New York for fundraisers on Thursday, but instead remained in Washington.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the delay “indicates the seriousness of this situation” with regards to Ebola.

“The president believed that it was important to convene the senior members of his team who are responsible for coordinating this response, and the president was not able to host that meeting and travel at the same time,” he added.

Earnest added that the White House anticipated the president would be able to reschedule his canceled campaign activities before Election Day.
