Tillis predicts victory in N.C., runoffs in La., Ga.
North Carolina Republican Senate nominee Thom Tillis on Monday predicted victory in his race but said contests in Louisiana and Georgia are likely to head to runoffs.
{mosads}Tillis also predicted Republicans would win control of the Senate, with 52 or 53 seats. Republicans currently have 45 seats.
“I think we win tomorrow night, by a slim margin, but we win,” Tillis said on Fox News Monday night.
He said he had closed the gap with Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) in polls and “the early voting went just the way we wanted it to.”
Tillis did not predict victory, at least right away, for Republicans in close races in Louisiana and Georgia. If no candidate gets at least 50 percent of the vote in those states, a second election is held. Polls there show no candidate is consistently above 50 percent.
“I think that Georgia and Louisiana are likely to go into a runoff, so that’s going to be another election on Dec. 7 and Jan. 6, but I think there’s no question in my mind that we get to a majority, then we got to get to Washington and govern,” Tillis said.
He also responded to a late Hagan radio ad featuring President Obama, who did not come to North Carolina to campaign. Tillis said it shows Democrats “are really desperate.”
