Priebus likely running to remain RNC chairman
Reince Priebus on Friday night said he would likely run for another term as chairman of the Republican National Committee following major GOP gains in the midterm elections.
He must clear the decision with his wife and children before he makes the final call, he said in an interview with Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren.
{mosads}”I think it’s likely but I don’t — I mean, obviously, I am not going there yet until I talk to her and the kids about it,” he said.
“I’m already going to get in a little trouble,” he added later, referring to his wife.
Priebus initially said he would make an ultimate decision in a few weeks. When pressed, however, he said he wanted to continue a host of changes the party started after the last presidential election.
“I mean, likely, I think it’s important for us to continue this obsession over the mechanics, the ground game and the data and get our act together,” he said.
Priebus was first elected to lead the party’s campaign arm in 2011, in a tough battle that went to seven rounds of votes. His first election ousted former Chairman Michael Steele. He coasted to an easier election in 2013, despite the party’s loss at the presidential level.
Shortly after that election two years ago, he formed a group to identify recommendations for moving the party forward. It was titled the “Growth and Opportunity Project” but is better known as the GOP autopsy.
Since then, the RNC has focused on a number of reforms, including an increased focus on technology, boosting campaign ground operations, and scaling back the GOP presidential primary debate schedule.
The RNC recently touted its renewed ground operation and use of technology in helping to win back control of the Senate and increase its majority in the House.
