Cruz gets standing O from Adelson
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) reportedly drew an enthusiastic reaction at the Zionist Organization of America awards on Sunday, getting a standing ovation from a crowd including GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson.
Casino magnate Adelson and his wife, Miriam, spent at least $98 million during the last presidential election cycle, and Cruz is seen as a possible Republican candidate for president in 2016.
{mosads}The conservative Texas senator brought the New York audience to its feet — including Adelson — when he recounted walking out of a September event where his praise for Israel was met with boos and heckles, Bloomberg reported.
“That’s when I had no choice but to say ‘If you will not stand with Israel, and you will not stand with the Jews, than I will not stand with you,’” Cruz said.
Someone in the audience reportedly yelled out “Cruz 2016” during his remarks. More than one person responded with “Run, Ted, run,” according to the report.
Adelson is a crucial booster for Republicans looking to mount a White House run in 2016. He has not taken so kindly to other possible candidates.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) apologized to Adelson earlier this year after using the phrase “occupied territories” to refer to the West Bank in a speech before Republican Jewish donors.
