Ousted senator confesses to breaking Senate rules
Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) joked that he was using his farewell speech as “confession time.”
{mosads}Begich, who lost his reelection race in November, admitted to bringing his son onto the Senate floor late at night, where the two munched on candy from the Senate’s special candy desk.
“One night, I came in late with my son and we took a photo,” Begich said on the Senate floor Thursday. “Yes, I broke the rules, and I will cherish that forever.”
Photography is prohibited in the chamber.
Begich continued to defy the Senate sergeant at arms by addressing his wife in the gallery, saying he couldn’t have done it without her. The one-term senator addressed her directly while she sat in the gallery — another Senate faux pas.
Begich joked that he is Catholic, which was why he needed to confess before leaving the body.
